Matteo Rinaldi, MSc

PhD Candidate in Media Psychology

Erasmus University Rotterdam

Conferences and Work

I am an Italian PhD candidate and teacher living in the Netherlands (EU) and working at the Erasmsus University Rotterdam, in the Erasmsus School of History, Culture, and Communication (ESHCC), in the Department of Media & Communication.

My work focuses on Toxic Entertainment, Media Literacy, and (social) media effects on young people.

Primary Work

My primary project, Audiences of Toxic Entertainment, researches the consumption, reasons for use, and effects of Toxic Entertainment on social media short videos on YouTube. I am conceptualizing a model of Tocix Entertainment to understand how hedonic (entertainment) and eudemonic (meaningful) messages work in synergy to normalize and empower toxic, symbolically violent discourse through persuasive strategies.

I analyze specific kind of masculinity, manosphere, and manfluencer content, with a mix-method research including qualitative content analysis, interviews, and longitudinal experiment, aimed at testing interventions to increase well-being responses.

Other experiences

I have been teaching as a Junior Lecturer for more than 900 students at the University of Amsterdam, Breda University of Applied Sciences, and Erasmsus university Rotterdam for a total of 5 years.

Previously, I worked in the corporate world as a Content and Marketing Specialist at EesySoft, FeedbackFruits, and the International Society for Blood Transfusions (ISBT).
